FIT FIFTEEN

I don’t cell phone photo much, but when I do, it’s probably coffee.

I don’t really post on the internet very often about my tiny van. This photo made it onto my IG stories once, because, well it was really nice light this cold morning as I made my aeropress camp coffee setup in crewpark. After getting the process started today, I probably won’t be posting all the much longer about it either. Today I made a Big Adult Decision™ and ordered a brand ol’ new vehicle from the factory.

It’s a weird mix of feelings (albeit firstly and foremost excited and privileged) ordering a new vehicle. But it seems like the right choice for myself and Angela right now. Most of the year it’s going to replace my tiny van (the photo above is a Ford Transit Connect, the ‘living space’ is 4x6 feet, total) as my mobile apartment for work. On full time work I stay in town 4 out 7 nights of the week, so I’m going to be very appreciative of the extra space night after night, drying clothes after a rain day at work is currently a challenge..

The van is also going to be used as a full on road trip machine. Angela and I have wanted to do more travelling together, before 2020 the budget wasn’t quite there, post pandemic avoiding flights seems like a great idea. And as much as we have unfinished business with some sunny beach vacations, exploring the landscape via roadtrips is on our minds. Angela wants to show me the East Coast where she’s spent time and has a network of friends, we both want to see Northern Canada and maybe most importantly I want to see the Cabazon Dinosaurs, I’ve wanted to see them since I first watched The Wizard.

And finally, I also have plans on having the vehicle be able to be turned into a mobile photo studio. It’s really exciting to me that I could roll up to a bike race ready to actually do the race, but afterwards pop up a backdrop, plug in a strobe if I need it and shoot portraits. I even see a way I could do group photos off the side of the thing.

Anyways, no, I don’t want to try and start a YouTube Van-Empire. I still really just want to make photographs and sell some prints, but I’m pretty excited and a little more likely to share progress as I flail along converting this van into a mobile apartment.
